Recovering from Cancer Through Movement, Activity

The Northwest Texas Healthcare System Cancer Rehabilitation program focuses on supporting patients in increasing their physical activity, as well as providing physical, occupational and speech therapies, as needed. The program offers both inpatient and outpatient services. Among our specialists include those in lymphedema, balance, vestibular disorders and orthopedics. Aquatic therapy is also available in a heated pool onsite.

Staying Active

The Northwest Texas Healthcare System Cancer Rehabilitation Program encourages patients to maintain physical activity during and after cancer treatment. Most cancer patients want to do all they can to stay healthy, but treatments such as surgery or chemotherapy can take its toll. Feelings of pain, nausea, fatigue, depression and other adverse side effects can debilitate your physical and emotional strength. The temptation to rest may come naturally, but excessive inactivity can leave you feeling worse. Regular, moderate exercise can make a positive impact in your recovery. According to the American Cancer Society, continued physical activity during and after treatment can:

  • Decrease nausea and fatigue
  • Improve muscle strength and function
  • Improve your balance and motion
  • Help you manage a healthy weight
  • Lower the risk of heart disease and blood clots
  • Decrease the chances of cancer reoccurring
  • Improve your mood and increase energy levels
  • Increase your self-esteem and independence

Specialists in Lymphedema

Patients who have undergone certain types of cancer treatment such as mastectomies, lumpectomies, removal of lymph nodes or radiation therapy are at a higher risk of developing lymphedema. It’s a condition that creates abnormal swelling in the body, most often in the arms or legs, caused by a blockage of normal lymphatic flow. Certified specialists in lymphedema offer a treatment called Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), which includes:

  • Manual lymph drainage
  • Graduated compression garments
  • Extensive education about skin care
  • Therapeutic exercises
  • Physical therapy
