The Heart Hospital of Northwest Texas

The Heart Hospital

The Heart Hospital of Northwest Texas opened in Fall 2003 on the Northwest Texas Healthcare System campus.

The Heart Hospital provides a comprehensive program for patients with cardiovascular disease in the Texas Panhandle.

The Cardiac Nursing Staff are trained in a 12-week cardiac internship program before they begin caring for patients. Many of the cardiac nurses have earned their certification from the American College of Cardiology Nurses. This highly professional support reinforces the physician's plan of care.

In addition to providing noninvasive testing, diagnostic cardiac catheterization, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology studies and cardiac rehabilitation, The Heart Hospital participates in research studies and is active in the development of new treatments for heart disease.

Patients receive assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation of their individual care needs. Cardiologists coordinate care with other members of the healthcare team, including the surgery and emergency departments.

Noninvasive Testing
The noninvasive cardiac laboratory includes tools to diagnose cardiac disorders. Studies can provide doctors with information about heart valves, heart muscle and the coronary arteries, as well as possible congenital heart abnormalities.

Exercise Testing:
  • Treadmill stress testing
  • Pharmacologic (adenosine dobutamine) nuclear perfusion scans
  • Exercise nuclear perfusion scans (thallium, technicium)
  • Exercise echocardiograms
Echocardiography:
  • Dobutamine echocardiograms
  • Exercise nuclear scans
Vascular laboratory:
  • Venous, arterial and carotid studies
  • Other cardiac nuclear studies: Nuclear ventriculograms (MUGA), nuclear viability studies (thallium)

Cardiac Catheterization
Cardiac catheterization involves the use of radiological equipment to diagnose heart disease. The Heart Hospital has three dedicated cath labs.

Interventional tools such as balloons and stents are fed through a catheter into the coronary arteries to reduce stenosis and improve blood flow.

Diagnostics:
  • Cardiac hemodynamic measurement
  • Coronary angiography
  • Endomyocardial biopsy
Interventional services:
  • Balloon angioplasty
  • Atherectomy
  • Coronary or peripheral stenting
  • Intracoronary thrombolysis
  • Primary angioplasty for acute heart attack patients
Cardiac Arrhythmia
The Electrophysiology Lab provides diagnostic and treatment options for patients with cardiac rhythm disturbances. Evalutions by the team of electrophysiologists include in-hospital and by-appointment diagnostic electrophysiological testing.

Diagnostics:
  • 24- to 48-hour ambulatory Holter ECG monitoring
  • Signal average electrocardiograms
  • Tilt table testing
Treatments:
  • Catheter ablation of ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias
  • Pacemaker implantation
  • Nonthoracotomy placement of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator devices
  • Antiarrhythmic drug therapy

Chest Pain Accreditation

Chest Pain Accreditation
Our community benefits from knowing that The Heart Hospital Chest Pain Center has been evaluated to ensure it meets quality of care measures, and that the requisite system is in place for continuing process improvement.

Accreditation is granted only to facilities whose chest pain centers meet the criteria established by a formal accreditation committee of experts, including representatives of the major coronary societies.
